This gun stock is custom carved for the Mule Deer Foundation. It is to be raffled off at the International Sportsman’s Expo this coming 2012, in Salt Lake City. This gun stock was quite fun to create. I found a picture of the deer on an old calendar. After playing with the picture I decided to carve it for the MDF this year.

The gun stock fits a Weatherby rifle. It has been custom carved/sculpted with three mule deer all of different ages. I have also hand painted the scene to bring out even more of the detail. On the bottom of the grip I have inlayed the MDF logo in composite ivory.

The lucky winner will be drawn during the International Sportsman’s Expo. You will have to check the MDF magazine to find out more details regarding this raffle. I’m sure whom ever the lucky winner is will enjoy this gun and will enjoy handing this gun down to their children and their children’s children for generations to come. It is a one of a kind master piece which any gun collector would be more then happy to add to their gun collection. Below is a little history of the Weatherby company.

History

The history of Weatherby® began in the mid-1940s when a young cartridge “wildcatter” named Roy Weatherby set out to change the world of firearm performance. Contrary to then-popular thinking (heavy bullets pushed at slow speeds), Roy believed that lightweight bullets traveling at super high speeds provided the best combination for one-shot kills. Based upon that philosophy, he spent the next decade developing the high-powered Weatherby Magnum cartridges for which the company is known today (.224, .240, .257, .270, 7mm, .300, .30-378, .340, .338-378, .375, .378, .416 and .460).

Throughout that period, Roy was also producing or re-chambering rifles designed specifically to accommodate his super-charged ammunition. At that time, he was producing his rifles on FN Mauser and French Brevex Magnum Mauser actions. However in 1957, Roy would again catch the attention of the shooting and hunting world with a proprietary action that is today recognized around the world as the Mark V®.

The foundation for the Mark V® was the need for a stronger, safer action, able to withstand tremendous pressure, and the possibility of blown primers and ruptured case heads (due to the unpredictability of early handloaded and wildcat cartridges). After nearly a half century of proven performance, the Mark V® continues to be known as the world’s strongest bolt action.

Roy Weatherby examines the results of shooting his magnum cartridges through water–soaked Los Angeles telephone directories.

Roy Weatherby and Roy Rogers after bear hunting with a Mark V.

In 1970, Roy once again showed his entrepreneurial spirit when he introduced the Weatherby® Vanguard® action, borrowing many of the same characteristics and design elements of the Mark V® with two locking lugs (vs. 9 in the Mark V).

The Weatherby® lineage continued in 1983 when Roy’s son, Ed Weatherby, assumed the leadership mantle of the company. Under Ed’s guidance, the company has seen growth and expansion both in Mark V® and Vanguard® offerings, including the new Vanguard® Series 2 rifle, which features guaranteed SUB-MOA accuracy. In addition to rifles, we offer a full line of Semi-Automatic and Pump shotguns, as well as accessories, apparel and collectibles.

The innovation and pacesetting performance associated with the Weatherby® name spans more than 65 years. Yet, while our place in history is firmly established, it is the prospects for the future that shine brightest of all.

Custom Carved Mule Deer Magazine Article

I would like to thank the Mule Deer Foundation for the article written about me in the September/October 2011 MDF magazine. It has been my pleasure to custom carve the guns for the MDF fund raisers. I look forward to carving the next gun stock for the MDF. They will be raffling off my next custom carved gun stock this coming February 2012. At the Sportsman’s Expo in Salt Lake City, Ut.

From designing the pattern, to creating the designs. To custom carving/sculpting the gun stock and then hand painting the gun stock to enhance the design. It is such a unique experience to watch it come to life. I know I will never get use to seeing my work take on a life of its own. It is something I will never get tired of. Still, to see the happiness in a customers eyes when I place their custom carved gun stock into their hands. It’s priceless!

I have included a copy of the the full article here for everyone to read.

Thanks again to the MDF for this beautiful article. I look forward to custom carving a design for you! Happy Carving! Deb

This year I have been given a very unique opportunity to custom carve a gun stock for the Mule Deer Foundation. The custom carved/engraved gun stock shown above is for one of the banquet coming up in May 2011. I believe this gun is to be raffled off during one of the banquets here in Utah. Everyone will have to attend their banquet to see which region gets to raffle off this gun for one of its members. Will it be YOU???

I have custom carved/sculpteda mule deer on the butt stock of the gun, as well as inlay-ed the MDF logo on the end of the grip. The art work for this gun has been custom designed for the MDF and hand painted by me. This gun has been signed and dated with the year I have carved it. Your children will fight over who gets this gun when you pass it from one generation to the next. Not to mention any gun collector will chomp at the bit to get the chance to add this gun to their collections.

There will be one more gun stock carved by me this year for the MDF. This will go on for the next eight years. You will have to check here often to see if I have completed another gun for the MDF. Good luck to everyone who attends the banquets. I’m looking forward to seeing who the winner will be for this custom carved gun stock! Happy Hunting!!! Deb

At this time of year, I would like to share my custom carved Thanksgiving with you. I find myself giving thanks for everything in my life. This year is no exception. Thanksgiving for me is a special time to get together with family and friends. Share memories and catch up on what’s going on in each others lives. Then there is also the FOOD!!!! We can’t forget the food or the game on TV! Still, it is a good time to stop and reflect on what has happened on my life over the past year. I have included the link to the original blog post. Just click on the picture and it will take you to the blog post.

I want to tell everyone who viewed or commented on my web site, THANK YOU! My custom carved gun stocks have been a very rewarding part of my life. I’m sure without your support and comments, I would not ventured out to share my carvings with world. Each of you have enriched my life in so many ways. I find myself getting up in the mornings just to run in the office to see who has sent me a comment or an email. I enjoy sharing my custom carved gun stocks with you. From the actual design to the basket weave on to the hand painted art work. I have a hard time wanting to come in the house at night after carving all day in my studio on a new project. I also send my thanks to my family and friends for your encouragement and support. I’m sure I have bugged you with my designs and projects. For these reasons and many, many more I thank you! I hope each and everyone of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Please stay safe while driving. We still have Christmas and New Years to celebrate remember!

I thought I would start something new this year. I am going show all the guns I have completed each year. So bare with me while I list them all for you to view again. Each client I have carved a gun stock for this year can now show them off again. Its your turn to brag on your gun stock carving! Here you can show off your custom carved, hand painted art work I have carved for you.

Each gun has been custom carved or (custom engraving) and hand painted to bring out the detail. There is no two guns alike! All of the guns have gone up in value after being carved. Gun collectors and appraisers will tell you the gun has doubles and even triples in price. Some have grown even more in value. Still, all of the clients I have carved for this year tell me their gun will never leave their hands. They will be handed down through the generations. What a legacy they will leave for their children.

If you are thinking of having a gun custom carved for a friend, client or family member. Contact me soon. I also have gift certificates available. Gift certificates make the best gifts. The person receiving the gift certificate for the custom carving can chose what they would like on their gun stock.

Again, enjoy your Thanksgiving and remember to drive safely. We all want you around for the rest of this Holiday season and the next! Happy Carving Deb L

I have been asked many time why I chose to carve or engrave gun stocks? Instead of carving eggs, gourds, engrave on glass, etc. Well, my husband is an avid hunter. He loves guns and has aquired quite a collection. We usually go to the gun shows that are in the Salt Lake valley. One time, as we where getting out of our truck, he said to me: “Its your turn to buy something. What do you want? What kind of gun do you want to buy?” I told him, “I didn’t know.” I would look for something while where in the gun show. When we entered the gun show, I heard the wine of a dental drill. At least that is what I thought I heard. We went to that booth to see what it was. Sure enough it was a high speed pen that used dental bits. Called the Paragrave. I was allowed to try the tool. I immediately fell in love with it. We wondered around the show for about another two hours. Came back to that same booth and purchased the tool.

Since that time I have tried my hand at engraving rocks, tile, eggs, glass, mirrors, metal and everything else I could get my hands on. In February 2009, I went to my first carving class with Dr. Lew Jensen, inventor of the Paragrave high speed pen. Again, we carved all kinds of differnet materials. Out of them all I have found I enjoy carving or sculpting wood. It is the medium I have found gives me the more enjoyment and the most challengs.

Then I asked Allen to allow me to carve on one of his guns. You can imagine what he said to that. He believed I could carve the guns. He just didn’t want me to begin on one of his guns. His collectors guns!!! NO WAY! So, he went to the local pawn shop and purchased me a Marlin 30-30 with a stainless steel barrel. The first carving I ever completed was a grizzle bear. After finishing the grizzle bear he wanted it. I told him NO. He purchased it for me and I was going to sell the gun. Now he wished he would have allowed me to carve on one of his guns. Reason being, I am quite busy now and of course his guns are the last ones on my list…

I enjoy creating custom gun stocks. Carving beautiful works of art to be handed down from generations to generations. Watching the expression of a gun owner see their prize possession again for the first time, is a real treat to me. They can not quit looking at the gun. You see, I not only carve the gun stock, I paint the sceen too. If it is necessary I will also sand the stock down and refinish it. Making the gun almost brand new again. The sky’s the limit almost.

Thanks for asking this question. I have enjoyed answering it. If you have a question about sculpting wood. Please ask your question below. I enjoy hearing from you. Deb L

What Animal Would You Like Me To Carve Next?

I am asking this question of my readers. What animal would you like to see me carve next? I have custom carved, or engraved, many animals on different gun stocks over the year. I have enjoyed carving each and every one. Some of them are more challenging then others. Still, I get a tremendous satisfaction from completing each carving or engraving I do. Now, I am wondering if there is a certain animal you would like to see carved? To date I have carved elk, moose, mule deer, a mountain lion, grizzly bear, and mountain goats to mention a few.

There are lots more animals out there to be carved. Which one should it be? Help me decide by commenting below. You will be the one making this decision for me this time. So hurry and leave your choice below in the comment section. I will be adding the basket weave and something else to the forend and/or grip of the gun.

Here are a few ideas. Please do not limit your decision on just these pictures. Antelope, Black Bear, Big Horn Sheep to name a few.

I will keep a tally of requests. The highest number will decide the next carving. The decision date will be August 15th. I will post the results here on my blog. The gun will be for sell and on display at the Cross Roads of the West Gun Show in Salt Lake City, Utah, this coming September 25 & 26, 2010. I’m sure this gun will make any gun collector proud. Will that person be you?

Thanks for participating in this decision! Deb L

Well the gunstock is finished!!! Hipp Hipp Hooray!!!

Hello everyone. Sorry I haven’t been posting on here for a while. The dreaded tax season is finally over for me. Now on to more important things. Gunstock carving!!! I have finished the gunstock carving on the .243 Winchester! This gunstock has multiple depths or levels of carving. The design of the pattern places the mule deer facing away from us. Making it very unusual and challenging to carve. Not to mention the mountain lion.

I purchased this gun knowing I would be doing some gunstock repair and refinishing. It still amazes me how well the guns turn out when they are finished. Gunstock carving or gunstock engraving, however you wish to call it. Can refurbish a gun to the point you have a hard time telling it is your own gun.

I will have pictures of the finished gun stock up soon. It’s been a very big challenge for me, and I’m glad to be finished with the main carving. I’m looking forward to hearing from everyone. Please leave me a post and tell me what you think!

Here’s hoping you will enjoy it!

Happy Hunting!

RUGER GUNSTOCK CARVING

Update March 7, 2010: I have had a hard time finishing this gun. The burs I use have been back ordered for the past three weeks. Pictures will be put on here either Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for waiting so patiently!

Today I have started another gun. It is a Ruger .243 Model M77. This Ruger gunstock carving has been inspired after finding a mount from a taxidermist. It is of a mountain lion attacking a mule deer. The image that formed in my mind helped me develop this custom carving on this gunstock. (Pictures will be forth coming). To bring some of the old west into this century has been a wonderful experience. This gun has been carved and painted to show the detail even more.

Just a little history of the M77 Ruger rifles. They where first produced in 1968.

Design details

From the beginning, the Ruger M77 was intended as a modernized Mauser 98, though numerous changes were made. Bill Ruger wanted to use investment casting in place of a forged receiver. The Sullivan-designed bolt dispensed with controlled-round feeding and instead used the simpler plunger style of ejector. A two-position tang safety and redesigned trigger system were also designed from scratch.

Perhaps the most novel feature of the M77 is the only one that has not been redesigned, the angled action screw. The front action screw of traditional bolt-action rifles draws the receiver directly down against the stock. The M77 uses an angled screw that draws the action down and to the rear, tightly bedding it against the stock.

Variants

The M77 has undergone one minor and two major redesigns. The first change involved incorporating a proprietary scope mount milled integral with the receiver. The first rifles had simple rounded-top receivers drilled and tapped for separate scope mounts.

M77 Mark II

The M77 was retooled almost entirely and reintroduced in 1991 as the Mark II. The safety, bolt, and trigger were completely redesigned. The claw extractor was retained, but the bolt face was opened up to allow controlled-round feeding. The plunger ejector was replaced with a Mauser style blade ejector. Finally, a three-position safety allowed the bolt to be operated while the gun was still on safe, making unloading of the rifle less hazardous. Ruger also eliminated the adjustable trigger that came stock on the original M77.

Hawkeye

In 2006, Ruger introduced new features and a new name for their rifle, the Hawkeye. Major changes were made to the trigger system and the stock was recontoured, but otherwise the rifle remained unchanged.[citation needed] The LC6 trigger addressed complaints from consumers that the Mark II trigger, though safer than the earlier one, was poorly designed for accurate shooting.[citation needed] The LC6 trigger is lighter and smoother. Despite the listed improvements of the LC-6 trigger there still seems to be nagging complaints about it
