Winchester .30-30 Model 94 Gunstock Before and After!!!

In June of this year, I posted some before pictures of this gun. After working for over a month on this gun. It is finally finished. Each side of this gun has been carved. On the front of the gun was a medallion of a stage coach. I did not remove this. Instead I carved two trees, representing two people who have intertwined their together. I also put their names with the date their lives became one. On the reverse I put a picture of a memory the gun owner had of their past life together. You see… Pauly contracted cancer and passed away several years ago. This gun was hers, but John wanted something to remember their time together. This is the result.

Each side has been custom carved and then hand painted. I didn’t know it at the time I painted the gun., but the colors I chose are the colors of the horses each of them road. I guess there was some kind of influence there. When I John received his gun last night he stated, “This gun means a great deal to me. I will never let it leave my hands. Thank you so much.”

How Do I Come Up With The Design?

How Do I Come Up With The Design you ask. Well, I do not have an easy answer to that question. There are many ways in which I come up with my designs for a custom gun stock carving. Usually, I see a picture of something that inspires me. I might be 4 wheeling in the mountains with my husband and see a landscape I like. I will take many pictures of that scene at different angles. Other times I will have a client bring me a picture of what they would like on their gun.

When I have client contact me to carve a gun for them. I will talk to them and find out all I can about their likes and dislikes. This helps me design something that I’m sure they will enjoy. This is when the real process actually begins. I begin focusing on the client. Their likes and dislikes. During this process, I actually allow the gun to talk to me. I know this is kind of hokus pokus, but to me it works.

Many times, in the middle of the night, an idea or design will come to me. I will have to get up and draw it out on paper. Otherwise I will not be able to go back to sleep until I get the picture out of my head. My clients and my art mean that much to me. A clients gun is very special to them. There is usually a story behind each gun. Wheather it was in the purchase of the gun or a special hunt. The gun means as much to the client as my art does to me. Even the value of a gun is increased greatly when a carving has been put on a gun. Ask any gun collector. This is what they will tell you.

What Can We Give Our Eagle Scout?

I was approached by parents of an Eagle Scout recipient. Their son has worked so hard to achieve his goal of becoming an Eagle Scout. Now with the awards night looming close. His parents have asked if I would do something special for their son. They brought me a Heritage Rough Rider .22 caliber pistol with faux pearl handles. After some major thought. I was able to come up with this idea for him. As you can see I have custom carved the barrel of the gun to acknowledge his award, along with his name. Then, on the other side, I have placed his parents sentiments. I am sure this award will be displayed proudly for all to see during his life time. He will be able to hand it down to his children. Inspiring his children to set their goals high and work for them.

Three beautifuly unique gunstock carvings

Three of my most favorite gunstocks carvings. I thought you might like another look at what I consider my favorite ones. Each is as unique as the wood itself. Each gun has its own personality, yet beautiful in its own right. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have carving them. Carving has become a real passion for me. From laying awake at night dreaming up the next project to finished design. Every part is very intriguing to me. My family tells me I’m obsessed with carving. Well, when you enjoy something, such as I enjoy carving gun stocks.  It is very easy to zone out and become obsessed with it. I hope you like the finished product as much as I do.

 Gunstock Carving and Repair

How many of us have gone hunting and in the excitement of the hunt  have dropped or banged your gun? Or maybe something has scratched your gun? Well, I can help! The first two pictures you see above are of my husband’s gun. This gun looked like it had been left out in the weather for years. As you can see the gun looks like a completely different gun now. The third picture is of a gun that had several deep scratches. As you can see there are no scratches now.

I can help you with your gun too. By carving a pattern on the gun breaths new life into your gunstock, and adds value. I do not work on the barrels (bluing them, etc.). Most scratches can be repaired like the guns listed above. Looking at the before and after picture, you would think it was a completely different gun. My husband was actually gonig to sell his gun becasue of its condition. Now, however, you can’t get him to part with it. There are other guns on my web site that have been repaired as well.

This last year has been a very special time for me. I have made many wonderful friends. For this reason, I would like to express my appreciation to all of you. You have helped me and inspiried me to step out of my comfort zone. First, I would like to thank YOU my clients for your support, kind words of encourgement, and for purchasing my art. It means a great deal to me to know my work is so highly appreciated. Secondly, I would like to thank all the teachers who have helped me understand how to use the Paragrave tool. Dr. Lew Jensen, Tamaree Littlefield, Keith Hone, Craig Hone, Darwin Dower, and Jeff Wolfe just to mention a few. All of you have given me encourgement and insight. Not to mention the knowledge of anatomy sculpting, wood carving, gunstock carving, leaf carving or answering stupid questions. The art I carve on the gunstocks and wood carvings would not be possible without your help. And last, my husband Allen, for your love and support, and for giving me the ultimate opportunity to express my creativity.

It is not easy to step out of your comfort zone and express your inner thoughts and desires. Or to carve the images you have floating around in your mind. Thus creating wonderful wood carving or sculpture. Normally, I would have made something I thought was nice. Then given it away as a gift. All the while hoping the recepient would enjoy it just a little. Today, I know my art is appreciated. By the over whelming response I received on a daily basis from you – my clients, friends, family, and teachers.

RUGER  GUNSTOCK CARVING

Update March 7, 2010: I have had a hard time finishing this gun. The burs I use have been back ordered for the past three weeks.  Pictures will be put on here either Monday or Tuesday. Thanks for waiting so patiently!

 Today I have started another gun. It is a Ruger .243 Model M77. This Ruger gunstock carving has been inspired after finding a mount from a taxidermist. It is of a mountain lion attacking a mule deer. The image that formed in my mind helped me develop this custom carving on this gunstock. (Pictures will be forth coming). To bring some of the old west into this century has been a wonderful experience. This gun has been carved and painted to show the detail even more.

Just a little history of the M77 Ruger rifles. They where first produced in 1968.

CUSTOM GUNSTOCK CARVING

Sorry to say, this gun will not be carved. The pattern the customer had choosen would not fit on the gun. So we have elected not to carve the gun. We’ll wait and carve a rifle for their anniversary instead. This will give the customer time to design a custom gunstock carving.

With the snow here and more to come, I’m glad I can stay in out of the cold and enjoy another custom gunstock carving. The gun I am building a pattern for is an Thompson Center Encore pistol. This gun will be a christmas gift from his wife and children.

W.W.GREENER SHOTGUN

Have you ever wondered what kind of gun they use to carry on the Wells Fargo stagecoaches? After being asked to carve a stagecoach on a W. W.  Greener shotgun replica. I was intrigued to find out how the gun came about.

Wells Fargo stagecoaches where equipped with the W.W. Greener shotgun after the stagecoaches where repeatly robbed. These guns where made by W.W. Greener. The gun was an unmistakable icon of Wells Fargo stage lines. There was always a driver and a gunmen sitting on top of the stagecoaches to protect their passangers and the cargo they carried. The gun  usually was a double barrel 10 gauge shotgun with a double pull. It has a short barrel of only 20 inch in length. The gun is very heavy compared to other shot guns I have held.

After much research, I have found this gun is one of the most reproduced guns in the world. Even gun authenticators have a hard time proving the gun is authentic. Even if a gun marked “Wells Fargo & Co. Express” does not mean it is in fact a W. W. Greener gun. Having the symbols marked on the gun does not mean it is an authentic Greener gun either. The history shows many gun manufactures built this type of gun and would mark it in hopes of fooling the buyer into believing the gun was a real W. W. Greener shotgun. Unless you have paperwork proving complete authenticity and proven by history experts. It is highly likely you do have a authentic W. W. Greener shotgun.

Although the legend lived on in this gun. A authentic W. W. Greener shotgun is one of the most sot after guns today by gun collectors.

CUSTOM CARVED GUNSTOCK

This is a custom carved gunstock for a long time friend. It is carved on a Remington 22-250 cal. The sceen that inspired me to carve this for him came from one of the many rides my husband and I take every weekend.

If you ever get the chance to visit the Uintah mountains in the fall of the year. You will find a serenity of peace and harmony. My husband and I enjoy going for rides in the mountains. It is a time to see the changing of the leaves and hopefully see some wildlife. One of our favorite animals is the majestic bull elk. They are usually in the rut about this time of year. Just after the bull elk shed the velvet from his horns. He will begin bugling to entice the cow elk to come to him. This is called “the rut.” The rut can begin as early as mid August to early September and will last well into November. When two bull elk want the same herd of cows they will fight each other for the rights to breed with the cows. This keeps the herds strong and healthy.

If you ever have the chance to be in the mountains and hear the bulls elk bugling. You will never forget the sound. It is the call of the wild. Nature’s way of helping animals to reproduce thus carrying on the species. We look forward to this time of year. We love to be out in nature. Looking and listening not only the majestic bull elk, but for the deer and other wildlife as well.
