Custom Carved Mule Deer Foundation Gun Stock

Custom Carved Mule Deer Foundation Gun Stock

This gun stock is custom carved for the Mule Deer Foundation. It is to be raffled off at the International Sportsman’s Expo this coming 2012, in Salt Lake City. This gun stock was quite fun to create. I found a picture of the deer on an old calendar. After playing with the picture I decided to carve it for the MDF this year.

The gun stock fits a Weatherby rifle. It has been custom carved/sculpted with three mule deer all of different ages. I have also hand painted the scene to bring out even more of the detail. On the bottom of the grip I have inlayed the MDF logo in composite ivory.

The lucky winner will be drawn during the International Sportsman’s Expo. You will have to check the MDF magazine to find out more details regarding this raffle. I’m sure whom ever the lucky winner is will enjoy this gun and will enjoy handing this gun down to their children and their children’s children for generations to come. It is a one of a kind master piece which any gun collector would be more then happy to add to their gun collection. Below is a little history of the Weatherby company. Read the rest of this entry »

Custom Carving Class

Custom Carving Class

L to R: Deb Lindsay’s, Doris’ & Jane’s

I have been taking more custom carving classes this past month, honing my skills even more. This class taught me to sculpt the project I am working on in clay then to transfer it to wood. This technique is not easy but extremely fun! From sculpting and then carving the sculpted model in to wood is a different avenue of art to explore. The excitement and challenging of creating a project in this manner opens many more possibilities for me. During the class, we sculpted the horses head for the first three days. Then carved the design into cherry wood the following 4 days.

There where two other women taking this class with me. Each of our project will be finished then framed or left without a frame and then displayed for everyone to see. At the point these photos where taken, the projects where not quite finished. Still they are really beautiful and each very unique. I will be posting pictures of my finished custom sculpted and custom carved horse head soon.

L to R: Craig Hone, Doris, Jane, Jeff Wolf & Deb Lindsay (Me)

The class was a total blast! One I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn to sculpt or carve. As you can see by the pictures, we very fortunate to be taught by one of the best, internationally renowned master wood carver, Craig Hone and internationally renowned bronze sculptor, Jeff Wolf. These two men are the world’s best teachers, very patient and knowledgeable not to mention friendly! I look forward to taking more classes from them in the future. Thanks Craig and Jeff for a wonderful and educational experience.

Custom Carved Henry 17 HMR

Custom Carved Henry 17 HMR

This custom carved Henry Repeating Arms.17 HMR was a Christmas present for my father. When I began carving/sculpting guns, my dad showed a lot of interest in my abilities. He would take my business cards around to everyone he knew to brag on me. It seemed quite silly to me at the time. That he would do this for me. Then last Thanksgiving, my mother asked me what I thought he would like for Christmas? See, my father owns a few guns but no longer hunts, due to his health. I know he always enjoyed going and he has always owned some guns. My mother on the other hand, hates guns. She knows how to shoot and can out shoot many men. Still, she doesn’t like them at all. So, when I mentioned to her she should buy dad a new gun. You can imagine what the response was. Then dad told her how much he would like to have a gun like Allen’s, (my husband) Henry .17 HMR. Well, mom called me and asked if I could get her a gun for dad. WOW! what a surprise that was. When we gave the gun to dad he was very happy. Then I told him I would be custom carving a design on the gun for him. Dad had tears in his eyes. I knew then I had picked the right present for father.

After Christmas, Dad picked out the picture he wanted on the gun stock. Then the designing began! After hours of drawing, cutting, and erasing I finally found a pattern that would compliment the gun. I then molded the design into clay. Also, changing more of the pattern to fit the gun. Then I started carving the design onto sample pieces of wood. This process also required more changes. Finally the pattern was ready for the gun stock. When I started carving the gun stock, the pattern just seemed to appear. It wasn’t difficult by any means. It was like this pattern was just meant to be on this gun stock.

After finishing the carving, I began playing with colors. The more I played the more fun it became to see the picture emerge and take shape. But the best part of this entire project was when I placed the gun back in my father’s hands and watched him look at the gun for the first time. You could see how proud he was to own a gun as beautiful as this one. See, Dad is a welder by trade but he is a carpenter at heart. So for me to custom carved a gun for him was a real thrill. For him, having the gun stock custom carved is one thing, but to have it  custom carved by his daughter was a totally different matter. I truly do not remember being more proud of what I do then at that moment. Thanks Dad for allowing me to custom carve this gun stock for you!

The gun has been custom carved/sculpted, and hand painted. Gun collectors alike would enjoy having this gun in their collection. This gun will be handed down from generation to generation of this I am sure. Not to mention the bragging rights of owing a custom carved gun stock by Deb Lindsay. This gun will be on display at the up coming Western Art Rodeo Association first ever art show on April 29, 30, 2011 at the Sundance Resort. I do hope everyone that can attend will do so. While you are there, please look me up. I would really enjoy meeting you. We can talk about designing a custom carved/sculpted gun stock for you.

Thanks for visiting my web site/blog. I do hope you will sign up for my email list. Thanks Deb

The grain of the wood are always beautiful not to mention the quality of the gun itself. This gun stock will have a custom carved company logo on it. I never thougth I would be using my gun stock carvings to advertise for a company. Still, it just goes to show you can put anything on a gun stock if you can image it. I will be posting pictures of this gun as I carve it. Please check back often to see the progress.

I’m not sure if I have ever shared some backgroud about the Henry Repeating Arms rifles. I hav included a little bit of the history of this gun below.

Fighting Elk Custom Carved On A Winchester 7MM Mag

Fighting Elk Custom Carved On A Winchester 7MM Mag

As you can see the Winchester 7MM Mag I started a month ago is finally finished. The fighting elk has been custom carved on the Winchester 7mm MAG. You may remember the past posts of how I have develope this carving from start to finish. I hope you have enjoyed the process. I’m sure you can tell it is not an easy process. Still, to me it is very enjoyable.

I refinished this gun by sanding down the gun stock then resealing it. This took the majority of the scratches out of the gun. Then I carved the scene onto the gun stock. This gun has the basket weave on both sides of the grip as well as on both sides forend as well as the bottom of the forend. T0 finish the gun, I have custom painted the scene onto the gun using oil paints. It truly is a work of art. Then I have applied a coat of finish to seal everything.

I have also checked to see what year this gun was manufactured, 1970. The gun still have many years of use left. It has given me great pleasure to carve and paint this scene on this gun. Your comments are appreciated. Please feel free to leave them below.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope to see you in person at the Cross Roads of the West Gun Show this coming September 25 & 26, 2010. The show will be held at the South Towne Expo in Salt Lake City, UT. Deb L

Why Did I Choose Gun Stock Carving?

Why Did I Choose Gun Stock Carving?

Winchester 30-30, Model 94 classic

I have been asked many time why I chose to carve or engrave gun stocks? Instead of carving eggs, gourds, engrave on glass, etc. Well, my husband is an avid hunter. He loves guns and has aquired quite a collection. We usually go to the gun shows that are in the Salt Lake valley. One time, as we where getting out of our truck, he said to me: “Its your turn to buy something. What do you want? What kind of gun do you want to buy?” I told him, “I didn’t know.” I would look for something while where in the gun show. When we entered the gun show, I heard the wine of a dental drill. At least that is what I thought I heard. We went to that booth to see what it was. Sure enough it was a high speed pen that used dental bits. Called the Paragrave. I was allowed to try the tool. I  immediately fell in love with it. We wondered around the show for about another two hours. Came back to that same booth and purchased the tool.

Since that time I have tried my hand at engraving rocks, tile, eggs, glass, mirrors, metal and everything else I could get my hands on. In February 2009, I went to my first carving class with Dr. Lew Jensen, inventor of the Paragrave high speed pen. Again, we carved all kinds of differnet materials. Out of them all I have found I enjoy carving or sculpting wood. It is the medium I have found gives me the more enjoyment and the most challengs. What Animal Would You Like Me To Carve Next?

What Animal Would You Like Me To Carve Next?

I am asking this question of my readers. What animal would you like to see me carve next? I have custom carved, or engraved, many animals on different gun stocks over the year. I have enjoyed carving each and every one. Some of them are more challenging then others. Still, I get a tremendous satisfaction from completing each carving or engraving I do. Now, I am wondering if there is a certain animal you would like to see carved? To date I have carved elk, moose, mule deer, a mountain lion, grizzly bear, and mountain goats to mention a few.

There are lots more animals out there to be carved. Which one should it be? Help me decide by commenting below. You will be the one making this decision for me this time. So hurry and leave your choice below in the comment section. I will be adding the basket weave and something else to the forend and/or grip of the gun.

Here are a few ideas. Please do not limit your decision on just these pictures. Antelope, Black Bear, Big Horn Sheep to name a few.

I will keep a tally of requests. The highest number will decide the next carving. The decision date will be August 15th. I will post the results here on my blog. The gun will be for sell and on display at the Cross Roads of the West Gun Show in Salt Lake City, Utah, this coming September 25 & 26, 2010. I’m sure this gun will make any gun collector proud. Will that person be you?

Thanks for participating in this decision! Deb L

What Is Relief Carving?

What Is Relief Carving?

It has come to my attention I have never explained what relief carving is or the different types. So, I thought I would do my best to explain this to you. Here goes…

There are actually several types of carvings. The type of carving I use is called full relief carving. This means I have a smooth piece of wood, like a gun stock, that I carve part of the wood away. The end result is the place where the picture is and there is no part of the original gun stock left in the area of the picture. In other words, the front side of a picture in 3D. There is 2D carving, or semi relief carving, which is a carving you would get if you left part of the original wood in the picture. You usually will see this from carving which has been completed by a laser. You do not get much shaping, (deminsion) to your picture/carving. There is also full round carving. This would be when you take a block of wood (say 4 inch by 4 inch) and carve the entire animal or object out of the wood. Like carving the complete elk, legs and all. Like the status of animals, etc. Here are a few of examples.

(Full Relief Carving)

As you can see this gun stock of a moose. I have used the full relief carving method to carve this gun stock. There is nothing left of the original gun stock in the picture. There is, however, the original gunstock outside the design.

(Semi Relief Carving)

Yet on the wood carving of the horses head, (shown above), there is still part of the original plate left in the main picture design. This is knows as semi relief carving.

(Full Round Carving) – ( This carving is a Craig Hone original)

With full round carving, (shown in the picture above) there is nothing left of the original outside portion of wood. The difference is you have all sides carved with the full round carving, only one half of a carving is left with the full relieve carving method, and with the semi relief method you still have part of the original wood in the picture.

After I have carved my design, I sand the project. Then I hand paint each carving. To me this helps to define the carving even more and it helps to bring the carving to life.

I hope this helps you to understand the types of carvings as well as just how unique each type of carving is. If you have any questions about this or have a question about something I have talked about on one of my posts. Please feel free to ask me in the comments below. I would be happy to explain it to you. If I don’t know something I will find out for you and let you know.

Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comments and feed back. Have a wonderful summer! Deb L
