This beautiful custom carved Winchester model 70 is my latest creation. I was approached to create this gun stock while I was participating in the WARA Spring Challenge. The CEO of Montana Silver Smiths jewelry asked me to custom carve this gun stock for his wife. Deborah hunts all over the world and as you can see I have even add her favorate saying “I live to hunt”. From North America to South Africa the hunt is on for the avid hunter. Her husband commissioned me to custom carve this gun stock for their anniversary. I’m sure his wife will proudly display her favorite gun for the entire world to see. Rick has emailed me to tell he “The stock looks fantastic. Exceeds my expectations!

The gun has been custom carved with fighting moose on one side of the gun stock and a caped buffalo on the check rest. The grips and forend have been customized with the basket weave pattern. Then to personalize the gun stock for her, I have added her name to one side and her favorate saying to the other. To complete the design, I have hand painted each scene to bring out the details even more which helps show the carving off. This gives her gun a complete new look.

Every gun collectors will be very envious of this gun. The value has doubled for this gun. Not to mention the gun will be in the family for many generations to come. Thank you for allowing to create this one of a kind work of art for your wife. I hope she enjoys it as much as I have in creating it.

This weekend is the International Sporting Arms gun show in Las Vegas Nevada. It is being held at the Riviera Hotel. This gun show is being sponsored by the NRA. The International Sporting Arms gun show is one of the largest gun shows in the nation. The show will be held January 14th through the 16th. There will be every type of gun imaginable there. Not to mention the gun collectors. I will have some of the guns I have custom carved/engraved there.

This year I will be attending the show as a vendor. At my booth you will be able to see the custom carved/engraved gun stocks I have completed. Each gun has been custom designed and sculpted, then hand painted to enhance the detail. There will be custom carved gun stocks, display cases, wall sculptures and ivory inlays for my clients to view. The guns have many different patterns on them, such as, basket weave, sculpted leaves, and hand painted art, to name a few. There will also be a few gun there that I have repaired.

I hope everyone will have a chance to come by and see the designs and sculptures. I look forward to meeting and visiting with each of you while you are there. See you at the gun show! Deb

Happy New Years everyone!!! I sure hope everyone has enjoyed this holiday season. Today I have been thinking about the goals I would like to accomplish with my custom carved gun stocks this year. In doing so, it has given me a chance to looked back on the goals I have accomplished last year. It still amazes me how many goals I was accomplished. So, for this reason I am going to set goals for my custom carving even higher this year. The first one is to attend 3 major gun shows within this year.

I am scheduled to be a vendor at the upcoming Las Vegas Antique Arms Show™International Sporting Arms Show™ Invitational Knifemakers Showing™ in Las Vegas NV. The show will be held at the Riviera Hotel on January 14th thru January 16th, 2011. The show is being sponsored by the NRA (National Rifle Association). I will be there with several of the guns I have listed here on my web site. Some of the other guns being displaying have been borrowed from my customers who love to show them off. This Las Vegas Antique Arms Show™ International Sporting Arms Show™ Invitational Knifemakers Show™ should prove to be the best of the year. I am looking forward to meeting many new people.

Gun collectors and enthusis’ alike will be there. As I’m sure you know by now, my gun stocks are all hand carved/engraved and hand painted. Each design has first been molded into clay then many practice pieces are carved/engraved before I start on the final piece. This process helps me to insure the custom carving will look exactly like it should on each gun stock. Customers who have purchased wood sculpting/carving/engraving from me in the past are simply amazed at the detail and clarity each piece has. Come to the gun show and judge for yourself. Then you can see why everyone who looks at the pictures on my web site all say “the pictures do not do justice to the art on the guns.” Wouldn’t you like to hand down your guns from generations to generation?

If you have the chance to come to the Las Vegas Antique Arms Show™International Sporting Arms Show™ Invitational Knifemakers Show™, please look me up. I would really enjoy meeting you and placing your name on my waiting. Then you will also have bragging rights and can show everyone your own custom carved gun stock.

Happy New Year to all, Deb

Last gun of the year for me is the custom carved Greener replica coach gun. After carving/sculpting the W. W. Greener replica stage coach gun last December, I really wanted to do a coach gun for myself. Well, here is it! This stage coach is an abandon stage coach. It symbolizes how we are loosing out past. The history of the Wells Fargo Stage Lines are written in our history book an in the movies. It is sad to see how these beautiful works of machinery are all but gone now. Thank goodness for Wells Fargo and their willingness to preserve the history and maintain their fleet of stage coaches. At least our children will have the opportunity to visit their museum to learn about them. As well as, being able to see the horses hooked up to these beautiful coaches. Thank you Wells Fargo!

As you can see I have hand carved the stage coach onto this coach gun. I have chosen not to add the basket weave to this gun. I have hand painted the gun stock to bring out even more of the detail. I am adding this gun to my collection of Wells Fargo Commemorative collection. Gun collectors and enthuses alike will appreciate the detail of this gun. This gun and many of my other guns will be on display at the Antique Arms show in Las Vegas this coming January. The show will be January 14 – 16, 2010 at the Riviera Casino in Las Vegas, NV. I look forward to visiting with you there. Happy Holidays to everyone! Deb

Custom Carved Thanksgiving

At this time of year, I would like to share my custom carved Thanksgiving with you. I find myself giving thanks for everything in my life. This year is no exception. Thanksgiving for me is a special time to get together with family and friends. Share memories and catch up on what’s going on in each others lives. Then there is also the FOOD!!!! We can’t forget the food or the game on TV! Still, it is a good time to stop and reflect on what has happened on my life over the past year. I have included the link to the original blog post. Just click on the picture and it will take you to the blog post.

I want to tell everyone who viewed or commented on my web site, THANK YOU! My custom carved gun stocks have been a very rewarding part of my life. I’m sure without your support and comments, I would not ventured out to share my carvings with world. Each of you have enriched my life in so many ways. I find myself getting up in the mornings just to run in the office to see who has sent me a comment or an email. I enjoy sharing my custom carved gun stocks with you. From the actual design to the basket weave on to the hand painted art work. I have a hard time wanting to come in the house at night after carving all day in my studio on a new project. I also send my thanks to my family and friends for your encouragement and support. I’m sure I have bugged you with my designs and projects. For these reasons and many, many more I thank you! I hope each and everyone of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Please stay safe while driving. We still have Christmas and New Years to celebrate remember!

I thought I would start something new this year. I am going show all the guns I have completed each year. So bare with me while I list them all for you to view again. Each client I have carved a gun stock for this year can now show them off again. Its your turn to brag on your gun stock carving! Here you can show off your custom carved, hand painted art work I have carved for you.

Each gun has been custom carved or (custom engraving) and hand painted to bring out the detail. There is no two guns alike! All of the guns have gone up in value after being carved. Gun collectors and appraisers will tell you the gun has doubles and even triples in price. Some have grown even more in value. Still, all of the clients I have carved for this year tell me their gun will never leave their hands. They will be handed down through the generations. What a legacy they will leave for their children.

If you are thinking of having a gun custom carved for a friend, client or family member. Contact me soon. I also have gift certificates available. Gift certificates make the best gifts. The person receiving the gift certificate for the custom carving can chose what they would like on their gun stock.

Again, enjoy your Thanksgiving and remember to drive safely. We all want you around for the rest of this Holiday season and the next! Happy Carving Deb L

Just finished, a custom carved Savage 308 rifle. This is a Christmas present for a friends wife. I have carved the Hawaiian flower (Hibiscus) with an Alaskan moose. I have also included the basket weave on the forend and grip of this gun stock. I have added accents to the grip (moose horn) and forend (Hibiscus flower). All of the custom carved art work is hand painted to enhance the detail. If this gun was appraised today it would appraise for $3700.00. Gun collectors would give their eye to have this gun in their collection. I’m sure this gun will be handed down from mother to daughter.

This gun has been discontinued years ago. I have included the history of the Savage arms rifle Model 99F. I hope you enjoy reading about this gun.

History

The Savage 99 was preceeded by the Savage 1895, which was the first hammerless lever-action rifle produced.

At one point, the Savage 1895 was one of the contending rifle models offered to the U.S. Army when they were looking for a replacement to their Springfield Model 1873 trapdoor rifle. The Krag-Jørgensen was chosen over the Savage and other models.

The hammerless design is a substantial improvement because the time from trigger pull to firing is less. This makes the rifle more accurate, because the rifleman’s muscular tremors have less time to move the rifle off-aim. A hammerless design is also less likely to jam in brush or clothing.

The 1895, as the later model 1899 and early Model 99, used a rotary magazine to hold the cartridges. The rotating magazine uses a spring-loaded spool with grooves to hold the cartridges. The Savage 1895 took advantage of the spool to include a counter to indicate how many shots are left. The Model 99 continued using this system for many years, until its replacement with a detachable magazine.

The magazine designed allowed the rifle to be one of the first to use Spitzer_(bullet). Previous lever-action rifles used tubular magazines, which placed rounds of ammunition end to end. With spitzer bullets, the tips of the ammunition would touch the primer of the round in front of it, possibly causing an accidental discharge.

During its production history the Savage 99 was chambered at one time or another for .303 Savage, .30-30 WCF, .300 Savage, 25-35 WCF (or 25-35 Win), .250 Savage (also called the .250-3000, as the first commercial round to produce a velocity of over 3000 fps), .22 Hi Power, .22-250 Remington, .243 Winchester, .308 Winchester, Winchester ’72′, .358 Winchester, 7mm-08 Remington, .284 Winchester, 38-55 WCF, and .32 Winchester Special among others.

Custom Carved Wells Fargo Stagecoach Shotgun

I recently was asked to show the process of carving a gun stock. Below is pictures of how this is accomplished. I have custom carved this W. W. GreenerShotgun replica last December. This was a Christmas gift for her husband. You can read the history of this gun as well as the history of the manufacturer by going to the following link: http://deblindsaystudios.com/carved-greener-shotgun/ or this one: http://deblindsaystudios.com/w-w-greener-shotgun/,

For your information, I have not included the clay mold or the many many practice pieces I did before carving this gun. I believe I carved twelve samples before I liked what I came up with. This is the final process of how I custom carved a gun stock.

After I have found my subject, designed the pattern, developed it in clay then carved twelve practice models of this pattern. I finally was ready to put the pattern onto the gun stock. This photo shows one of the ways I put a pattern on the gun. I first cover the entire gun to protect it from any unforeseen problems. Then put the pattern I intend on carving on the gun. I then carve the pattern into the gun stock.

This picture shows how the pattern is carved into the gun stock, the background being removed and the shaping of each character.

This photo shows the detail that has been carved into the gun stock. This is the last step before sealing the gun stock back up and hand painting the gun.

Here is the completed gun stock. I have custom carved the stagecoach into the butt of the gun then hand painted the design to bring out even more detail.

This is another picture of the completed gun stock showing how the design fits on the gun.

This is the full view of the gun with the Wells Fargo Stagecoach. This gun belonged to a Great Great Great grandson of a gunmen that worked for Wells Fargo Stage Lines. He told me the family story of his great great great grandfather and how he worked for them all those years ago. This is why his wife asked me to carve this scene onto this gun for his Christmas present.

I did not carve the basket weave or anything else onto this gun. I felt it would have detracted from the original design of the gun. This gun is one of the only coach guns made in the United States. I hope you have enjoyed seeing how I design, carve and paint my clients guns. I’m sure each will be handed down from generations to generations. They are one of a kind works of art. I strive hard to make sure I do not make two guns alike.

I look forward to carving a custom design for you. Please contact me so we can begin working on your gun! Happy Carving!!!! Deb

History of W. W. Greener

Here is the history of W. W. Greener. The man and the history behind the legend.

The history of W.W. Greener begins in 1829, when William Greener, who had been working in London for Manton, a prominent gun maker, returned to his hometown of Newcastle and founded the W. Greener company. In November, 1844, he determined that most of the materials and components he used for gun making came from Birmingham, and his business was being hampered by the distance between the two towns. Hence, he moved his business from Newcastle to Birmingham.

During the period of 1845-58, W. Greener was appointed to make guns for Prince Albert. Money obtained from supplying South Africa with two-groove rifles enabled the company to erect a factory on “Rifle Hill”, Aston, in 1859. This was around the time when the firm really began to prosper.

Mr. Greener was a firm believer in the concept of muzzleloaders and refused to make any breechloaders. Hence, his son, William Wellington Greener, struck out a line of his own (the W.W. Greener company) and produced his first breechloader in 1864. When William Greener died in 1869, the two companies were amalgamated together as the W.W. Greener Company, and carried on by William Wellington Greener. William Wellington Greener was responsible for several innovations, as described in the sections below, and it was on the strength of his inventions that the company became famous. Under W.W. Greener, the company established offices in Birmingham, London, Hull, Montreal and New York.

William Wellington Greener was succeeded by two of his sons, Harry Greener and Charles Greener. Leyton Greener, Harry’s son and fourth generation took over as Chairman in 1951 and today the company has a fifth generation, Graham Greener, as one of its directors.

Production

Production of Greener weapons started in 1829, when W. Greener began manufacturing his muzzleloaders. W. Greener was the first to discard vent holes in breeches. He was also instrumental in improving the hardness and quality of barrels, by using more steel in their manufacture. He also improved the Harpoon Gun and his model was the one adopted by the Scottish Fisheries, and was still in use in 1910. His greatest innovation was the invention of the expanding rifle bullet.

In 1845-59, W. Greener was appointed to make sporting guns for the Prince Consort. In the 1851 London Exhibition, the company received the highest award “for guns and barrels perfectly forged and finished”. In 1853 and 1855, the company received Silver medals at the New York and Paris Exhibitions. The company’s products were also sold for as much as 75 pounds, in the Southern states of America, before the Civil War.

Since W. Greener didn’t believe in breechloaders, his son, W.W. Greener started his own factory. In 1864, he produced his first patent, an under-lever pin-fire half-cocking breechloader with a top bolt entering the barrel underneath the top rib.

When W. Greener died in 1869, his son W.W. Greener merged the two companies into one. His next patent was the self-acting striker, followed by a famous cross-bolt mechanism produced as a single top bolt, in 1865. In 1873, this cross-bolt mechanism was combined with the bottom holding down bolts to produce the “Treble Wedge-Fast” breech action. The treble wedge-fast was one of the strongest breech actions ever invented and was widely copied by other manufacturers, after the patent rights expired.

The introduction of choke boring in 1874 is regarded as W.W. Greener’s greatest achievement. It was this invention that made the firm’s name famous. A discussion about this is in the section below.

In 1876, the firm introduced the Treble Wedge-Fast Hammerless Gun, otherwise known as the “Facile Princeps”. This gun was cocked by the dropping of the barrels. This action was one of the strongest ever produced. The W.W. Greener company restarted production of Facile Princeps guns in 1998.

In 1880, the firm produced a self-acting ejector for its guns, followed by the “Unique” ejector gun. These guns were designed to eject the spent cartridges when the gun was opened. Manufacture of the “Unique” ejectors stopped during the Second World War, and the company has recently begun to manufacture them again.

In 1895, W.W. Greener invented the world’s first Humane Killer, a gun designed to kill cattle, sheep, pigs and horses, quickly and easily. This instrument was adopted by the War Office, for use in the Veterinary, Remount and Butchering Departments, and by the Admiralty for is Victualling yards. The instrument was also modified to use .310 caliber cartridges. After several years, the models became obsolete in the 1960s and ammunition for the older models was impossible to obtain. Recently though, the company was asked to manufacture another model and hence, the Humane Killer Mk II was introduced. This new gun fires a .32 ACP round.

Choke Bores

The introduction of Choke Bores was largely responsible for the fame of the W.W. Greener name. Ironically, he did not invent it, nor did he claim to do so. The invention of choke boring is usually attributed to American gunsmiths. The first known patent for choke boring was granted to a Mr. Roper, an American gunsmith, on April 10, 1866. This was followed by a patent claim in London by Mr. Pape, an English Gun maker, whose patent application was six weeks too late. Mr. J.W. Long, in his book “American Wildfowling”, credits a Mr. Jeremiah Smith of Southfield, Rhode Island, as the gunsmith who first discovered the concept, as far back as 1827.

While American gun smiths were the pioneers of the choke boring system, they had not really progressed beyond the elementary stage and their guns would lead, throw irregular patterns and not shoot straight.

W.W. Greener’s first intimation of the choke formation was derived from instructions given in a customer’s letter, in early 1874. The customer’s instructions described a choke, but did not give any details on the size or shape, or how it was to be obtained. Hence, W.W. Greener had to conduct many experiments to determine the perfect shape and size of a choke for a given rifle bore. After that, he developed tools to produce the choke bore profile correctly and smoothly. The system of choke boring that he pioneered was so successful that it was later adopted by other manufacturers and hence, some authorities give him the credit for inventing the concept.

In December 1874, the first mention of Greener’s choke bore appeared in an article by J.H. Walsh, the Editor of Field magazine. The article mentioned the extraordinary shot pattern that the Greener shotgun could produce. The next issue came with an advertisement from W.W. Greener, stating that the firm would guarantee that their new guns would shoot a closer pattern than any other manufacturer. The advertisement claimed that Greener 12 bores were warranted to shoot an average pattern of 210, when the best 12 bore gun in the London Gun Trial of 1866 could only average 127. Naturally, the advertisement generated considerable controversy, especially from rival manufacturers of cylinder guns, who refused to believe the numbers quoted in the advertisement.

In order to resolve the controversy, the Editors of Field magazine decided to conduct a public trial in 1875. The London Trial of 1875 pitted choke bores and cylinder guns of various manufacturers in four categories—Class 1 (large bores, any boring), Class 2 (Choke bores, 12 gauge), Class 3 (Guns of English boring or Cylinders) and Class 4 (Small gauges, any boring). The choke bored guns performed better that the cylinder guns in all these tests, and W.W. Greener choke bore guns won the class 1, class 2 and class 4 categories. Greener Choke bores also won at the London Gun Trials of 1877 and 1879, and the Chicago Field Gun Trial of 1879. The results of these trials were responsible for making the W.W. Greener name famous.

Fake Greener Guns

During the 1880s, as the company became well known, several small manufacturers in Belgium and Australiaattempted to manufacture copies of Greener weapons. In several cases, the name was misleadingly similar: Greenen, Horace Greener, Albert Greener, A. Greener, W.H. Greener, A.H. Greener etc. are several examples of names of spurious weapons. Note that J.H. Greener and Albert Greener were two brothers of W W Greener and both brothers also made guns. Most J H Greener and a few Albert Greener guns are genuine.

In other cases, the maker would print “Greener” in bold gilt letters on the top rib and their own name in small characters, elsewhere on the gun. When one of these makers was challenged in Belgian courts, the defence advanced the theory that the weapons were using the Greener cross-bolt system and hence, the larger letters were intended to refer to the system, and not the maker of the weapon.

Due to the large number of forgeries, the W.W. Greener company offers to authenticate genuine Greener weapons for a small fee.

Custom carved Savage Arms Model 99 is my next project. As I’m sure every gun collector knows, this gun was discontinued years ago. It is a very nice gun to shoot. Very accurate and dependable. I have been asked to carve a moose with the Hibiscus flower on this gun. This is a Christmas present for one of my clients wife. She has no idea she is receiving this gun. Many men would never think of giving a gun to his wife. Unless you are like this family. All are avid hunters and enjoy getting out and being in the outdoors. This gun will have a beautiful moose scene carved on the gun stock. It will be outlined with the Hibiscus flower. The forend and grip will have the basket weave along with something else to enhance the design. You will have to check back to see what gun stock art has been put on the grip and forend. The custom carving is all hand finished along with the hand painting that accentuates the detail of the carving. Gun collectors world wide will be envious of this gun. I’m sure it will be handed down from generation to generation. Your comments are greatly appreciated. Please feel free to leave them below. Happy Halloween! Deb

The Savage Arms Company is a firearms manufacturing company based in Westfield, Massachusetts, with a division located in Canada. The company makes a variety of rimfire and centerfire rifles, as well as marketing the Stevens single-shot rifles and shotguns. They may be best-known for the Model 99 hammerless lever-action rifle, no longer in production, and the very popular .300 Savage sporting cartridge, which was the parent case for the .308 Winchester cartridge.

The Model 99, and its predecessor models 1895 and 1899, are a series of lever action rifles created by the Savage Arms Company in Utica, New York.

Savage Arms was founded in 1894 by Arthur Savage in Utica, New York. Within 20 years they were producing rifles, handguns, and ammunition. Savage merged with the Driggs-Seabury Ordnance Company during World War I and produced Lewis machine guns. In 1920 Savage bought Stevens Arms. In 1939, Savage introduced the Model 24 double rifle (a configuration uncommon in the U.S.), which sold over a million copies.

During World War II, Savage turned again to military production, making heavy munition. Savage made most of the Thompson submachine guns used in World War II. As quality wood was earmarked for military gun stock production, Savage produced some Model 24 .22/.410 combo guns and Model 94 single barrel shotguns with stocks molded from Tenite plastic. After the war it produced the first motorized lawnmower.

The company was run by a variety of owners from the 1960s to the 1980s. Savage eventually ran into financial trouble in 1988 and filed for bankruptcy protection. Production was then reduced to the basic Model 110 bolt-action rifle.

A turn-around began in 1995 with the company returning to private ownership, led by Ronald Coburn, previously of Smith & Wesson. Today the company produces a wide variety of firearms and has a reputation for producing accurate, inexpensive rifles. Some of their recent success can be attributed to their development in 2002 of a factory-installed, safe, user-adjustable trigger, called the AccuTrigger. The company recently launched AccuStock an aluminum stock embedded rail system to further enhance action stability and accuracy. This new technology is now available on several of their models.

Savage was awarded the Manufacturer of the Year by the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence in 2003.
